Every large-scale software project can get done in 90 days - according to the TOSI approach by Schlegel and Pflaeging

Project management approaches were never particularly well-suited for large-scale software implementation projects within organizations. Take "ERP transformations", which still take 18 months, 24 months, 3 years - or forever. From a rational, time-oriented perspective, it is clear that such approaches must be deeply flawed. And they are: Project managers (and executives) assume that there is a trade-off to have between scope/quality, cost and time.

"That way of thinking is called the iron triangle. It is a profoundly flawed assumption." says Niels Pflaeging. "It is, I believe, the reason why so many software implementations drag on forever, fail or disappoint." Niels has written about this conundrum in an article on the Red42 web magazine on Substack.

Niels continues: “One of the things that fellow BetaCodex Network associate Andreas Schlegel and I figured out last year is that software implementation projects (ERPs and the like) should never take 18 or 24 months or more. They should take 90 days and be strictly time-oriented. Put differently: The iron triangle, which generations of project managers have taken for granted, is a hoax. Conventional thinking has been misled by flawed assumptions around time, cost and quality.”

To say that any project like that can be done in 3 months may seem slightly crazy or incredible at first, Niels admits, but he accentuates that there is substance to it. "Andreas and I call that approach Time-Oriented Software Implementation, or TOSI. Read a bit more about it on the BetaCodex Network website.
